Plumbing in Madison: what to know
Madison homes draw very hard water from a deep sandstone aquifer, and the city has its own rules for plumbing permits and inspections. Here is what that means for your plumbing.
Hard water
Madison Water Utility says city water contains 18 to 20 grains of hardness per gallon and calls it very hard.
Where the water comes from
A deep sandstone aquifer under the city, pumped by more than 20 wells run by Madison Water Utility.
Permits and inspections
City of Madison Building Inspection handles plumbing permits. Work on one- and two-family homes is inspected at the underground, rough and final stages.
Lead service lines
The city says its lead service replacement program is largely complete. Owners who still find a lead line may qualify for a rebate of half the cost, up to $3,000.
